The HEWS(Health,Education,Work and Shelter)Foundation is running a free cleft lip/palate surgery mission for at least 30 patients at the University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti from March 28, 2011 to April 1, 2011.

HEWS is a charity committed to helping poor people with pressing needs to live healthy lives, get good education, decent shelter and gain power to lift themselves and others out of poverty.

Its primary focus is on providing free cleft lip & palate surgery to the thousands of Nigerian children with the congenital defect of cleft lip and palate.

Many children go through life with a cleft lip/palate. Most will never be able to speak or eat properly and some will go through their entire lives without being able to smile. The greatest tragedy is that virtually every one of these children can be helped with surgery that takes as little as 45 minutes but for the fact that majority of them are too poor and cannot afford to pay for the surgery.

The Mission is done in conjunction with Sahara Energy Limited and the Ekiti State Government.

Twelve children from Ondo State were first beneficiaries of this intervention as they had their lips and palates repaired last November at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure.

The Mission, led by Dr. Kolawole Ogundipe, supported by six other plastic and maxillofacial surgeons along with several other healthcare professionals from various hospitals across the country, is poised to leave a smile on the faces of its beneficiaries.

The programme will be declared open by Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, supported by the State Commissioner for Health and other top officials of the Ministry.
