April polls: Police recover arms, ammunition in mop-up exercise

BY Elvyn Usman
LAGOS – The Lagos State Police Command, yesterday, said it had recovered over 1,000 arms and ammunition since it started its mop-up exercise, last month.

The exercise,  aimed at checking the proliferation of arms during, before and after the polls, according to spokesman of the command, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, formed part of the command’s strategy and preparedness for the general elections.

Vulnerable points, according to Jinadu, were raided, leading to the recovery.

He made the disclosure while parading a suspected kidnapper, whose attempt was foiled and another robbery suspect.

In the month of February alone, Jinadu said a total of 595 ammunition were recovered from various criminal hideouts, while  the remaining  were recovered this month.

The command according to him, “is working assiduously to ensure  a violence-free election in the state. First, we had intensified our patrol and stop and search routine, while general raids of vulnerable points and black spots had been carried out, with  criminals arrested and prosecuted.

“The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Yusuf Alkali, on his part, had met with other security agencies in order to have a symbiotic relationship towards actualiing this goal. The CP had also met with stakeholders in the election, where he urged them to play according to the rules of the game.” Jinadu added.
