It was aimed, among many other things, to up the ante of golf in the Akwa Ibom State, popularise the Le Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort and afford golfers from around the country have a memorable golfing extravaganza.
All these, the first of the three-legged Le Meridien Open Golf Championship sponsored by Heineken attained by the time curtain fell. Despite only making its debut, the entire championship, had Port Harcourt-based Paul Abiyou, emerge the overall winner of the competition courtesy of the lowest nett score he carded, recorded minimal hitches.
Abiyou was tailed by Okey Ananaba, who carded 149, to earn 2nd place nett (men’s Category A). Port Hacourt-based Alice Wifa, towered in the ladies nett category winning it with a score of 165. Helen Ayo, of Calabar Golf Club followed her with a score of 166.
The event, at the behest of Le Merideien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort and International Management Group (IMG), also provided an avenue for prominent members of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA of A), like Tim Montgomerie and Retief Goosen, to further their relationship with the facility, through the memorabilia they endorsed for a certain class raffle winners.
