East governors have called on the Federal Government to expeditiously handle the reconstruction of federal roads in the zone to alleviate the suffering of road users.
Rising from their regular meeting in Enugu, the governors listed the affected roads to include Enugu-Abakaliki, Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, 9th Mile Corner-Makurdi and Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
According to the governors, the roads are critical for easy vehicular movement within the South East and between it and other geopolitical zones of the country.
They also called on the Federal Government to exhaustively investigate the murder of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, governorship candidate in Borno State, Alhaji Modu Gobio and urged it to ensure that those behind the unfortunate incident were exposed and prosecuted.
“If this is left to fizzle out, there is bound to be a repeat as the country goes into the 2011 general elections,” the governors said.
The governors also decided that the five South East states would collectively take care of the hospital bill of former Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, who was flown abroad last month for medical treatment, considering his stature in the country.
