Inclement weather causes rescheduling of Okafor’s wake ceremony says family

New York, Feb. 5, 2011 (NAN) A wake ceremony for ex-Nigeria football international Uche Okafor was postponed on Friday due to inclement weather in Dallas, Texas, a family friend said.

“The viewing and wake ceremony will now hold Friday, Feb.12 at the same place and venue,’’Ugochukwu Nwaokoro, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in New York by phone.

Okafor was found hanging on Jan. 6, in the upstairs hallway of his Little Elm home in Texas, in what the Little Elm Police Department initially ruled a “suicide.”

Outrage and complaints by the Nigerian community in Dallas over shoddy handling of the inquest caused the Little Elm police department in Dallas, Texas, to recant on their earlier conclusion.

Troy Taylor, the chief investigator of Denton County Medical examiners office, said on Jan. 24, that the manner and cause of death is “pending” because “laboratory studies,” are ongoing.

As at Feb. 4, the website of the Tarrant County, Texas,, still listed the case as same.

The 43-year old Nigerian, who played for the Super Eagles in the 1994 World Cup in the U.S, is survived by his ife and 15-year-old daughter.

Family members said his burial would hold in Ubomiri, Imo State, Nigeria on Feb. 17.
