A NEW Army formation,14 brigade of the Nigerian Army, has been established at Ohafia, Abia State, the General Officer Commanding the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Major General Sarkin Yaki Bello, has said.
There was an Army formation in the town, but was relocated some years ago.
General Bello, who spoke at Government House, Awka, when he paid a courtesy call on Governor Peter Obi, explained that the establishment of the new Brigade was in line with the vision of the Chief of Army Staff towards the transformation of the Army to meet contemporary challenges, some of which were kidnapping and bombing.
The GOC commended the governor for his consistent assistance to the Army, adding that it showed his concern for the security of lives and property.
According to him, the operation to rid Aba, Abia State, of criminals has recorded 95% success, and that the Army would not rest until 100% success was achieved.
He explained that the Army had focussed attention on Anambra which also falls within the operational jurisdiction of his Division, adding that he would be attending the state’s security meetings for routine advice on security matters, especially from the experience he had garnered as the Commander of Joint Task Forces in many troubled areas.
Responding, Governor Obi commended the Army Commander for the visit and assured that he would be welcome to the state at all times.
He also commended the Army for assisting Anambra State to overcome some of its security challenges.
