The West Africa Football Union, WAFU, has announced that the winner of the second edition of the WAFU Nation’s cup will pocket the sum of $50,000 (about 7.5 million naira).
This was revealed through a press release by the Sub Regional football governing body on plans for staging a successful competition in Abeokuta and Ijebu Ode this April.
This is the first time the competition will attract prize money as even the CAF Nations Cup does not have a winning purse. The breakdown of prizes shows that the losing finalist will receive $30,000 and third place winner $20,000.Prize money was introduced to encourage players that play in various leagues of the sub region.
Organizers of the this year event have drawn up plans to have a colorful opening and closing ceremony rich with the culture, colour and glamour of events of these magnitude. Already, plans for a theme song for the competition expected to be produced by top Nigerian artistes and others Top performers from the sub region have reached advance stage.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are expected to defend the trophy they won last year when they beat the Teranga Lions of Senegal in a keenly contested final.
The 2011 edition of the Wafu Nations Cup kicks of on the 28th April with the final scheduled for 8th of May at the M.K.O Abiola Stadium Abeokuta.
