FEDERAL Capital Territory Minister, Sen. Bala Mohammed, has commended leaders of four political parties, which held their national conventions and presidential primaries in Abuja and the security agencies for organising peaceful exercises.
Coming against the recent bomb blasts in the capital city, Mohammed said the FCT was the winner over the successful party conventions.
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, Social Democratic Mandate Party, SDMP, and Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, held their primaries in Abuja at which President Goodluck Jonathan, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, Prof. Pat Utomi and Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buharu emerged as presidential candidates respectively.
An otherwise peaceful city with low crime rate, the enviable place of Abuja in the area of security was violated last year with the bomb blasts that rocked the precincts of Eagle Square on October 1 and the Mogadishu Cantonment Mammy Market on December 31.
In a 14-paragraph statement, he said: “It is against the backdrop of those bitter experiences that on behalf of the good people of the FCT, I express our sincere appreciation to the leaderships and members of all the political parties that held their conventions and primaries in Abuja for the nomination of their various candidates for the forthcoming general elections, in particular the presidential poll.
“The successful conduct of the Peoples Democratic Party’s national convention last Thursday and Friday, for instance, was a sublime demonstration of Abuja’s usual conviviality, hospitality, fascination and harmony. The convention which took place at the Eagle Square, Abuja, ended with the overwhelming election of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, President, Federal Republic of Nigeria and Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo as the presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate respectively of the party for the forthcoming general elections. It is gratifying that the ruling party and the President showed good democratic traits and values particularly during the convention.
“In the same vein, I extol the democratic and patriotic disposition of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the Social Democratic Mega Party (SDMP) and other political parties which successfully held their respective conventions at the Eagle Square, Old Parade Ground and other venues in Abuja to elect their presidential candidates and other contestants. The same commendation goes to the presidential flagbearers that emerged during those contests staged in Abuja like the CPC’s Gen Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Shekarau (ANPP) and Prof Pat Utomi of the SDMP among others.”
