Oyo: Akala, Folarin trade words over primaries

BY OLA AJAYI
POLITICAL differences between Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State and the Senate Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin worsened weekend, as they used uncomplimentary remarks on each other.

While Governor Akala described the leader as someone who had not added any value to the state since he became a senator, Folarin said the comments were unbecoming of a governor and also revealed the backwardness of the mind they emanated from.

The abusive comments were the aftermath of a controversial re-run election which the senator claimed to have won when Akala, Chief Richard Akinjide maintianed there was no election and that the results alloted was a hoax.

Mrs. Jumoke Akinjide had won the earlier senatorial primary election held, but for the reasons best known to the national secretariat of the party, it directed that re-run election be conducted.

It was during the controversy that the same national body of the party, weekend, confirmed the victory of Jumoke. On her way from Abuja where she had gone to pick the party’s nomination form, she visited the governor who said Senator Folarin was a curse to the state.

Folarin, replying the governor, said what he said must have come from an uninformed mind and clearly showed the backwardness of the mind which might have thought of material benefit, rather than tangible benefit expected of a lawmaker.

According to Folarin, “all the people that have benefitted from me will not go to Akala or his deputy to talk about it. As the governor,  in the almost five years in the state, what has the generality of the people benefitted from his administration except looting and unprecedented corruption?”

Meanwhile, filled with gratitude for the victory, Jumoke said: ”All my co-contestants, former military administrator of Lagos State, General Raji Rasaki, Mr.Gbenga Olaofe and Dr. Gbola Adetunji have all congratulated me after accepting the result of the election. But Folarin who was never an aspirant in the election, attempted using his influence with the Presidency to change the verdict of the people. He  has no basis for congratulating me.

“This is a moment of history, we have to be factual so that history can be recorded. The truth of the matter is that Folarin was never an aspirant into the Oyo Central Senatorial District election. In the January election, three people contested with me and those were the aspirants screened by the screening committee of the PDP. The party attempted a rerun, because of the influence of Folarin in the presidency but the truth has prevailed”
