Former Super Eagles defender, Yisa Shofoluwe, says more tournaments like the Obama Cup as well as other international friendly matches will help coach Samson Siasia build a formidable Super Eagles team before the Africa Cup of Nations next year.
Shofoluwe in an exclusive interview with Sunday Vanguard Sports, in Lagos, said the friendly matches being played with home-based players against clubs and the Flying Eagles showed that there is hope for the local league players.
The former defunct Abiola Babes Football Club of Abeokuta defender said home- based players were more committed and stronger than the so-called Europe-based professionals.
He argued that if they could be merged, the team could be like the Brazilian squad.
“It is a good thing for coach Samson Siasia to have gone round to some parts of the country to watch our Premier League games which is a plus to him because some of his predecessors did not even like watching our local league while some who were local league discoveries said there are no players worthy of a national team call in the league.
“I must tell you that this Obama Cup tournament will definitely be one of the tools for Siasia to build a formidable team ahead of the Africa Nations Cup and the next match against the Ethiopians in March.
“The friendly matches with the Flying Eagles and some clubs in our local league have shown that he means business. He has a big task to build a good team that will do the country proud at the next Nations Cup,” Shofoluwe added.
