Worried by the spate of political killings and assassinations in the country, a Lagos-based Legal Consultant and Chairman of Nigerian Branch of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party, NPP, Mr. Kofi Atiemo-Gyan, has suggested that political offices should be made less attractive.
He made the remark in Lagos while exchanging views with newsmen on the state of the nation, an occasion where he strongly condemned the bogus salaries and allowances that political office holders are earning in Nigeria.
Atiemo-Gyan suggested a three million naira gross renumeration for Senators and state governors, also recommended two million naira for members of House of Representatives and 1.5 million naira for members of state House of Assemblies.
He said: “The constituency allowances given to legislators is selfish and not in the interest of the people.
“Responsible local government administrations should work in harmony to execute community projects and not that money for the development of communities should be entrusted in the hand of someone in Abuja or the state capital.”
He further advised that certain clauses in the constitution that gives too much of privileges to few Nigerians to the detriment of the masses be removed, claiming that unless this is done, politicians will continue to kill and eliminate themselves.
“There is the need for us as Africans to learn good lessons from advanced democracy and adopt them,” he added.
