Buhari, Ihonvbere bemoan leadership situation in Nigeria

FORMER Head of State and Presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and former Presidential aide, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, yesterday, in Benin City, bemoaned leadership failure in Nigeria, regretting that the situation had thrown the nation 50-years backward politically.

The former military leader, who introduced the War Against Indiscipline and the queue culture in the early 1980s, as a way of restoring sanity to the system, said politics in Nigeria was no longer interesting due to the activities of players who, according to him, think only of their pockets and not the nation.

Buhari, who was special guest of honour, at the inauguration of ‘Practice RITA’, an initiative of the Solomon Edebiri Centre for Change, said Nigerians must fashion out a way to move forward and bequeath a better legacy to yet-unborn generations.

Buhari who spoke through the former Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Benin, UNIBEN, Prof. Patrick Igbinovia, said “some attribute the present attitude of our people to bad leadership, some to politics while others say it is systematic but truth be told, politics in Nigeria is still 50 years behind.

“To say the fact, politics in Nigeria has become a family thing where everything goes and corruption is entrenched. The people have become demoralised in a seemingly unchangeable situation that at the same time calls for urgent change. We must fashion a way out to move the country forward and then this seminar that has brought us together will be a fruitful thing and what we espouse will not be in vain,” he added.

On his part, Prof.Ihonbvere, who also is a governorship aspirant in Edo State under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said that the nation was suffering from intellectual deficit. “The state has abandoned the people to the extent that the people are behaving in antagonistic manner. Our people take leadership for granted and unless we learn how to hold our leaders accountable for their actions, we will go no where as a nation.

“The Federal Government must stop this plead bargain being given to people who stole in this nation. The plead bargain is another plot by the elite to continue to kill this nation,” he added.
