A reputable philosopher, Jean Jacques Rousseau, opined that “patience is bitter but its fruits are sweet”. Although majority of philosophers differ in their analysis on how trust can be sustained, the consensus is that trust is vital for the survival of social interactions or relationship.

This important human virtue develops gradually through constant interaction that can easily be destroyed if poorly managed.

In the Nigeria of today, trust is becoming a scarce virtue among politicians and social critics as most of them hardly keep to promises even at the best of relationship. The pertinent question one may ask is who can one then trust without running the risk of disappointment? The most painful part of it is to be disappointed, betrayed, ridiculed or blackmailed by those you trust, painstakingly labored to support, train to fame or prominence. That was the scenario witnessed at the just concluded PDP National Convention in Abuja.

Although, these days not many politicians and job seekers are willing to wear the cloak of success while waiting for the success but from experience, the sweetest of all fruits is the one allowed to mature by itself as President Goodluck and Governor Yuguda patiently waited for their project to mature. I decided to go philosophical to intimate the reader on the level of treachery, insincerity, sophisticated hypocrisy, high scale dishonesty and scientific betrayal in Bauchi politics as openly displayed at the January 13, 2011 Peoples Democratic Party National Convention.

Victims of those betrayers of Bauchi State extraction occupying positions of responsibility in the Federal Government are the governor of the State, Isa Yuguda and President Goodluck Jonathan. Yuguda, who at the inception of the PDP in 1999, made use of his resources, compassion and goodwill to support majority of those who attained prominence in politics at the Local, State and National levels, is today a victim of sophisticated hypocrisy, blackmail and hatred from those he labored to support as exhibited at the Eagle Square that penultimate Thursday.

Most of those holding political appointments in the Goodluck administration or in the National and State Assemblies attained such positions from the influence and support of Yuguda. Ironically, most of those beneficiaries of the benevolence are presently working secretly to scuttle his fast rising political fortune and derail the cordial relationship built over the years between him and President Goodluck.

To be more candid, majority of those opposing Yuguda and the Goodluck project in Bauchi State were supported and fed by Yuguda to attain positions ordinarily they could not have attained most especially those who betrayed the trust reposed in them as delegates to the convention. Part of their grouse is that Yuguda has curved a nitch for himself in national politics, is all out to discourage regional, tribal and religious politics and entrusted with the coordination of the Goodluck presidential project in the North-East sub-region against their wish.

They may be right having lost out in the power game, but that should not be taken to the highest level of hatred forgetting the fact that they are members of the same party (PDP) aspiring to govern Nigeria. The record has already been made as Yuguda and Goodluck Ebele Jonathan provided an enabling environment as leaders for the system to thrive without strings attached which is a commendable effort. It is hypocritical for any person to point an accusing finger on Yuguda for protecting and projecting the interest of Bauchi State at the national level and campaigning for the success of the Goodluck project in the North-East sub-region for national unity. Today, those politicians have not only constituted themselves into clogs in the wheel of Bauchi State progress but secretly financed the 44 delegates that voted against the collective interest of the people of Bauchi State at the convention in an effort to disgrace Yuguda and put the State to shame and doubt of loyalty. For instance, an impeccable source close to one of those public figures who stood against the success of the Goodluck project had before the convention in Abuja, confined to some delegates who sneaked out to meet him of his determination to scuttle the efforts of Yuguda and put him to shame before the Goodluck project.

To an ordinary Bauchi State electorate, the action was an insult, an abomination and calculated to destroy the cordial relationship existing between the Goodluck led federal government and Bauchi State. As the convention ended, majority of the electorate in Bauchi State developed more interest in the success of the Goodluck project hoping to prove the detractors of Yuguda wrong in the forthcoming general elections.

What brightens their mind to forget the political tsunami is that Governor Yuguda has redeemed his 2007 campaign promises and is contesting the 2011 election in answer to their clarion call to complete his on-going transformation exercise and serve even better that cannot be easily challenged.

As a commentator on public affairs, I make bold to say that of all the gubernatorial candidates parading themselves before the electorate in Bauchi State for the 2011 contest, Yuguda undoubtedly stands the most acceptable, objective, straight forward, determined and favoured by the electorate, which forms part of this objective analysis. One can recall what transpired in 1998 with majority of those claiming to be key players in the state politics running errands for those few in active participation.

In the 1999 elections, those claiming relevance as of today, could hardly deliver their respective wards to their party, PDP. The same politicians consciously defeated the PDP in 2007 at the general elections and are now regrouping to repeat same act through an attempt to fight Yuguda, the very politician that defeated them on the platform of another party and President Goodluck.

Whatever grudge they may have against Yuguda and Goodluck, one thing is certain that the duo remain respected in Nigerian politics as was proved at the convention. For instance, in three years, Yuguda restored hope to the hopeless, brought food on the table of the downtrodden and smiles to many faces in Bauchi State.

Indeed, Yuguda rekindled hope in the masses of the people with several poverty intervention initiatives that are sources of pride to the beneficiaries while within eight months, president Goodluck has stabilized fuel supply in filing stations nationwide and stabilized the pump price, restored hope to Nigerians and now strategizing to put the necessary structures on the ground for a better Nigeria devoid of tribal, regional or religious inclinations.

The other aspect of the grudge is the control of the PDP machinery in Bauchi State. As an erudite politician with the interest of the people deeply rooted in his heart, Yuguda resisted all threats to entrust the PDP machinery into the hands of political merchants. The epileptic party executive he inherited was instantly dissolved and sanity restored in the polity with a human face. A fresh election was conducted to move the party forward to the next level. But the old order preferred to sort it out in court and were ‘fortunate’ to receive a bashing.

Their interest to use the party machinery to champion, their individual, regional, tribal, religious and political interests were dashed. The interest of the majority remained supreme and President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan surfaced as the most acceptable PDP presidential candidate.
