Former Super Eagles player, Foluronso Okenla has called on ex players clamouring for an indigenous coach as an assistant to Samson Siasia to allow him choose whoever he thinks could discharge the duty with him, no matter his skin colour.
Okenla who said that his relationship with Siasia predates their time as Super Eagles players said the Bayelsa-born coach earned his position as the new Super Eagles coach and therefore should be allowed a free hand to do his job.
“Samson earned his position as a coach so he should not be pressurised to choose a Nigerian as his assistant. Moreover, the Dutch guy (Simon Kalika) has been with Samson for a long time and is trust worthy,” he said.
Okenla who is now an international marketing consultant added that “the mere fact that you played for Nigeria does not mean you should be involved in the administration of the game”, as he called on Nigerians to give Siasia enough time to mould a new Super Eagles.
“What he needs to succeed is time, adequate resources and the support of those around him. (Clemens) Westerhof took his time to deliver, he started with a (Nations) bronze, then a silver before he got a gold,” he said.
He waved off the thinking that Siasia may find it difficult curtailing the excesses of the ‘big boys’ in the team, stressing “no Super Eagles player can be bigger than Samson who played for Nigeria at every level including at the World Cup.”
The former Shooting Stars player said that though he is close to Siasia he will not offer unsolicited advice to him as it may cause some problem but was quick to add that if he seeks his advice he would be ready to offer.
