Founder of the Northern Union, NU, and Second Republic Senate leader, Dr Abubakar Olusola Saraki has said the union has nothing against the presidential ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan whom he described as a very humble personality he had ever met.
The elder Saraki also declared yesterday that he was quarreling with his son, Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State over political ambitions of people in his cabinet without seeking approval from him.
He spoke in an interview with journalists in his Iloffa GRA country home, Ilorin yesterday when the founder and Presidential aspirant of Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Gen Muhammadu Buhari went for a private meeting with him.
Speaking on the position of the Northern Union on the presidential ambition of President Jonathan, Dr Saraki explained that the people of Niger Delta area have not approached the union over the ambition of Jonathan.
His words: “Northern Union, you know, we still struggle, we went the whole country in 1992 and 1994 during the Abacha regime. We agree that the Presidency should rotate between the North and South, eight years north, eight years south. Now the south are saying now eight years and they wanted to continue that was when Northern Union was formed to fight the struggle and thank God our prayer was answered and Yar’Adua came and now Jonathan. Since then, President Jonathan wants continue.
“We expected the people of the Niger Delta, because we fought this struggle together, to meet us if Jonathan wants to continue. The people of the Niger Delta ought to have consulted with us and up till today they never told us anything that their son wants to continue.”
“Speaking on the political situation in the state, he said: “I am quarrelling with my son, I am surprised that he allowed over 12 aspirants to be contesting for the governorship seat of Kwara. It has never been like this.
“In this hall, we took decisions, but I am surprised that Bukola has left everything loosed and every kind of character is coming out to contest, those who cannot win elections in their wards, I don’t even know some of them. Bukola has never been in politics, he has not spent enough time in the state,” he added.
