ABUJA — Families of 86 police officers felled by the bullets of men of the underworld during the year were yesterday presented with cheques worth N55 million by the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ivy Okoronkwo, who represented the IG, lamented the high rate at which policemen performing their duty were being killed by men of the underworld.
She called for better equipping of the police through better protective gears and enhanced firepower for the men of the force.
Urging the beneficiaries to make good use of the money, the DIG noted that though money would not raise the dead officers, it would go a long way to assist their families in the absence of their bread winners.
She warned the beneficiaries to beware of fraudsters who might want to defraud them of the money, noting that experience had shown that when such monies were given, fraudsters began to make moves towards benefitting families.
Depending on the ranks of the officer, the beneficiaries were presented cheques ranging from N500,000 to N1. 5million.
Responding, Mrs. Clara Chukwu, wife of late ACP John Chukwu, thanked the police authorities for the kind gesture and appealed to the police to always carry families of deceased police officers along when such unfortunate incidents occurred.
