EU partners NGO on budget monitoring

By Tina Akannam
Dutse—European Union, in collaboration with Democratic Action Group, DAG, a Non Governmental Organisation, is sensitising NGOs and Community-based Organisations, CBOs, on how to  monitor state and local government councils for effective implementation of budget proposals.

Executive Director of the Democratic Action Group, Malam Muhammed Mustapha Yahaya, dropped this hint yesterday an interview with newsmen, shortly after the opening ceremony of a one-day sensitization workshop organized by EU and DAG to NGOs and CBOs in Dutse, Jigawa State capital.

Yahaya explained that his organizations observed with dismay that benefitting communities had now been sidelined in the budget process.

He disclosed that the aim of the sensitisation programme was to mobilise the general public on the need to know the importance of budget, all its processes and be part of the planning, preparation, implementation and monitoring in  the interest of the electorate.

The  DAG Executive Director, who further explained that his organisation and  EU were running pilot projects with three selected local government councils in the state, said they were selected from the three senatorial districts of the state with 40 people from selected area.

Malam Mohammed said all participants in the workshop would be trained on how to approach their representatives in state assemblies, councillors and chief executives and intimate them on  the project they wanted to be executed in their various communities.

He also noted that in present global economy, the public was a major stockholder in their budget planning, preparation and monitoring, and lamented that up till now, government officials in Nigeria were not allowing the communities to participate in the budget processes.
