It will definitely be a merry Christmas celebration for 40 professional golfers who last Thursday made the cut and gave their all yesterday in the maiden edition of the on-going Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan Pro-Am golf tournament taking place at the Ibori Golf and Country Club, Asaba.

For the first time in the history of the game in Nigeria, the pros competed for a whooping N7m winning purse and to tell you how juicy the package was, the 40th player on the course as at yesterday smiled home with N75,000.

The winner danced to the bank with 20 percent of the prize money. The last time, the pros earned anything similar was when Abuja based Edet Umoh won the star prize of N1.3m at the tournament organised few years ago by the PGA of Nigeria at the Ikoyi Club golf section.

The Dr. Uduaghan event teed off on Monday with the pre qualifiers for the professionals and by Tuesday, over 80 registered Nigerian professional golfers and category one players invaded the 18 holes golf facility in Asaba. Never has Asaba seen the quality and quantity that graced its course. The pros who came in from Ada where they competed at the Miccom golf tournament,  promised that they would not leave Asaba should they fail to hit it big in the Dr Uduaghan tourney sponsored by club captain Hon. Daniel Mayuku.
As you read this, winners of the pro event are already shopping for Christmas.

Meanwhile, the amateurs will today take the center stage today as over 120 golfers set the course on fire. They would be playing over 36 holes and winners would equally go home with fantastic prizes.

IGCC captain Mayuku say the course is ready for the amateurs and promised them a swell time when they hit the course.
The last time there was a major tourney in Asaba (Ali Abdullahi memorial), golfers described the new bunkers as nightmares. Today, as the amateur session tees off, golfers are prepared for the worst.
