RESIDENTS of Ughelli metropolis in  Delta State have been thrown into confusion, following the lynching of a 30-year-old man over dispute resulting from the collection of development levy.

Vanguard gathered that the deceased, whose name was simply given as Godspower, was killed at about 4pm by the “deve” collectors, while working at the construction site belonging to Dotie Street branch of the Christ Apostle Church.

An eye witnessed told Vanguard that the levy collectors, numbering about five, stormed the construction site and demanded for payment of development levy from those working at the site.

The eye witnesses, who sought anonymity, said heated argument broke out when the deceased told the collectors that the development levy had already been paid by the pastor of the church to some of their youths.

According to the source, the levy collectors who had declared that the payment was made to wrong hands, started beating the deceased with clubs.

The source said the deceased, who only got married last year to his pregnant wife, slumped and died before he could get any medical attention.

The source further disclosed that one of the suspected assailants was apprehended and handed over to the police in the Ughelli ‘A’ Division, while the others absconded.
