Tourism Minister re-iterates economic importance of tourism

The Minister of Tourism and national Orientation, Alhaji Abubakar Sodiq, has re-iterated the importance of tourism to the country’s economy.

Speaking after attending the Ministers’ summit here at the on going World Travel Market in London, Tuesday, the Minister said the tourism if properly developed will have an impact on the country’s economy.

Alhaji Abubakar Sodiq  disclosed that the ministry will strengthen its capacity to gather the necessary data  to show to the policy makers on the contribution of the industry to the economy, “ at the Ministers’ summit leaders and decision
makers debated  how to chart a more sustainable and adequate  course for global growth.

“Tourism has a crucial role to play in facing the challenge of unemployment,climate change and fair development. While commending the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) for the good outing in the four day event, the Minister noted that it is only through events like the World Travel market that the country’s tourism potentials can be projected to the entire world.

“It is wonderful experience to be here because since the country has been participating at the World Travel market, I don’t think we have had it so good.

We want to show case our tourism and country as a preferred destination, it is through event like this that we can achieve our desired target. ”He added “I want to commend NTDC for this and for being able to carry every stakeholder along in this project.

Alhaji Abubakar Sodiq explained that the NTDC could put up such a good showing because the government has started seeing the needs to develop tourism as an
economic factor.

“I want us to attract more political and economic will from the government as to the importance of tourism to the need of our economy.” The minister appealed to the private sector to join hands with the public sector in the drive to position Nigeria as a number destination in the world.

Speaking earlier, the Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Otunba Runsewe, thanked the minister for his assistance which has since the corporation increasing the country’s stand this year. He said what they have tried to do is to show case the best of Nigeria and “webelieve that to do so we need environment that is conducive.”
