S-West SIECs seek role in voters’ registration

By Clifford Ndujihe
TO improve the forthcoming fresh compilation of voters’ list, the South-West chapter of the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commission, FOSIECOM, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to include the SIECs in the exercise billed for January 15 to 29, 2011.

Specifically, they want the INEC to approve poll watchers for SIECs in each registration unit as active observers and monitors in the exercise. And to make voters’ register to be current, South-West FOSIECOM urged INEC “to adopt a continuous registration exercise which will make it automatic for anyone attaining the age of 18 to be eligible.”

They also want the SIECs to be responsible for the conduct of governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections in each of the federalism in accordance with the dictates of true federalism.

These were part of the resolutions of South-West FOSIECOM during a meeting in Lagos last week.

According to a joint communique of the meeting by Justice Abdul-Fatai Adeyinka (LASIEC and FOSIECOM Chairman), Hon. Kayode Adeleye (chairman, Ogun SIEC), Hon. Olaleye Olasunkanmi (chairman, Oyo SIEC), Alh. Jimoh (Ondo SIEC), Barr. B.O Agbede (Ekiti SIEC and Mr. G.A Afolabi (Ekiti SIEC) among others, they also called for an extensive voters’ education to boost the conduct of the 2011 polls.
