The Athletics Federation of Nigeria( AFN) has sent in a strong five man list to the organizers of the 10th AKS/NNPC/MPN Schools Athletics Championship whose grand finale will come off in Eket on Saturday,December 4.
Maria Wophill who spoke to journalist yesterday from her US base where she had gone to participate in the Nike kitting sign on ceremony, said the federation has received invitation to participate in the championship and has consented.
I spoke to the consultant yesterday and confirmed the participation of a strong contingent from our end that will be led by the President, Chief Solomomn Ogba.
“ By the grace of God, I will be in that delegation, with the technical director of the AFN, one board member, a technical official and a secretarial staff” she said
She added further that the championship is a regular feature on the athletics calendar and “…..We have always endeavoured to participate and contribute to its success. For instance, a week to the championship, we dispatch a technical official to Eket to help us calibrate and confirm the suitability of the tracks, so that we can be in a position to adopt times and distances so returned” she added.
The AFN Secretary General also lauded the regular feature of the championship that includes the seminar, training and retraining of the games masters and technical officials that are involved in the competition.
“Last year we supervised an intensive one week course for the technical officials and we were very impressed with the results that came out of the exercise. Given the Akwa Ibom motivation, we are also planning similar courses for all the states of the federation.” She concluded.
Mr Solomon Abari, who in the last four years has been involved in the standardization of the tracks said he is always looking forward to the Eket Championship. “ It is great working with those kids.
