ABUJA — The Police yesterday, explained before an Abuja High Court sitting in Wuse, why it failed to execute the warrant of arrest issued against the former Inspector General of police, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo, insisting that the said order was made in vacuum.

The Police equally pleaded with the high court for an interpretation of the arrest order, contending that Justice Olukayode Adeniyi failed to specify whether the order was targeted at Onovo as a person or the office of the Inspector General of Police which he had hitherto represented.

Police counsel, Mr J.Y Nwadike, further contended that since Onovo was no longer the IGP, it was imperative for the court to clarify whether the present police boss, Mr Hafiz Ringim, could be held liable for an offence that was allegedly committed before he was appointed into office.

It would be recalled that the Abuja high court under presiding Justice Adeniyi, ordered the IG of police to personally appear in court to show cause why he should not be committed to prison for allegedly violating four separate court injunctions, allegedly served on him on August 9, 12, 18 and 20, 2010, with regards to the continued detention of two police corporals, Onyebuchi Eze and Kenneth Chikwe.
