Bauchi-PEOPLES Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential aspirant Dr. Bukola Saraki says he is not in the presidential contest for fun or using the campaign to negotiate a seat for himself in the Senate.
The Kwara State governor asserted this during a visit to the Bauchi State House of Assembly during which he received the endorsement of officials and members of the House.
Saraki who used the opportunity to trump what he described as achievements of his eight year stint as Governor of Kwara State said that Nigerians should vote for a leader that has the capacity of moving the nation forward and not those who go into leadership because of their selfish and dubious motives.
“Nigeria has all the potentialities that is required for development, but with a good leader steering the affairs of the Nation, the rate of development in the country will be faster than what it is now.
I am not just concerned about becoming president for the fun of it, but it is because of the future of this great nation that I have at the back of mind that I am contesting the seat of the presidency come 2011.”
“After being governor for eight years I could have settled for normal life as minister or senator, but because am concerned about the progress of this nation and I feel this country needs change,” he said in rebuttal to claims in some quarters that he was using the campaign to seek a senatorial, ministerial or high office in the presidency after his eight year stint as governor.
Saraki, who is the outgoing chairman of the Nigerian Governor’s Forum disclosed that he transformed Kwara State and has made a difference in the eight years of his administration. Among his achievements, he claimed was the provision of uninterrupted power supply in the State.
In his response, the Speaker of the State House of Assemblyy, Alhaji Abubakar Fago said the people of Bauchi state are aware of Saraki’s developments in Kwara and they as such have no doubt he is the most suitable candidate in the 2011 presidential election that would turn around the fortune of Nigeria at this crucial time.
“We are not only pledging our support and votes for you during the PDP primaries, but we will work hard to convince others to do the same .We also believe that honour should be given to whom it is due. Judging from what you have done for your state and your recent appointment of chairman of the governor’s forum, we are convinced that you are more than capable to take this country to a great height”. Faggo said.
