OWERRI—An Owerri High Court has condemned to death two Bakassi Boys over the murder of former deputy chairman of Ehime Mbano local government chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr. Lawrence Iwuoha, and his driver, Damian Anyanwu.
It also discharged and acquitted a legal practitioner, Mr. Okey Ehieze, and former chairman of Ehime Mbano local council, Mrs. Amaka Agbiogwu, of the murder charges hanging on their necks over the killing for for over six years.
The two Bakassi boys, Jude Nwaokoye and Amaechi Anunobi, are to die by hanging.
Delivering the four-hour judgment, Hon. Justice Goddy Anunihu, also discharged and acquitted Mrs. Chinyere Nwachukwu, wife of Mr. Columbus Nwachukwu, who was linked to the murder of the victims but had remained at large thereafter.
Justice Anunihu said there was documentary evidence to prove that Nwokoye and Anunobi were deeply involved in the murder of the victim and particularly mentioned the 10-page statement which the second accused person voluntarily made to the police.
He also maintained that for taking the investigating police officers to the scene where the corpses of the duo were dumped in a septic tank was also enough evidence that he participated in the heinous crime.
The High Court Judge also explained that the third accused person was found guilty of aiding and abetting the escape of Columbus Nwachukwu from Bakassi Camp at Okigwe and his accessory of the information of the murder.
In discharging and acquitting Ehieze, an Owerri-based lawyer, and Agbiogwu, Justice Anunihu said that the prosecution failed to prove their alleged involvement in the murder case beyond reasonable doubt.
