Nigeria boxing federation officials came under ridicule after Nigerian boxers failed to win a pin at the recent Commonwealth Games in New Delhi India.
The Sports Minister, Isa Ibrahim Bio took the boxing officials to the cleaners and labeled them an incompetent bunch.
But the coach who stood in the corner of the boxers in New Delhi, Ndika Noel Nsofor stopped short of blaming the minister and the National Sports Commission for causing Nigeria’s failure in boxing.
“We were not prepared for the Commonwealth Games. Of course it is quite natural that they expected us to win medals because boxing did well in the past.“But how well did the National Sports Commission support our preparations? We only had one month to get ourselves ready.
“When we first went into camp, we stayed for only three weeks and they asked the boxers to go and they also sent me away. One month to the Games they asked us to come back and we didn’t get the kind of preparations we wanted. And so in that situation, did anybody expect us to perform magic?”, Nsofor quarried.
He said that Nigeria has a pool of talented boxers, but without adequate preparations, there was little they could do to bring laurels home.
