AWKA—SECOND Republic President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra and his Rivers State counterpart, Chief Rotimi Amaechi, are among those to receive special awards at today’s annual lecture instituted in honour of the former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, by authorities of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State.
Others to be honoured are the former Governor of Anambra State, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife ad former minister of education, Professor Nwabueze, SAN.
Rector of the Polytecnic, Professor Godwin Onu said the annual lecture and awards were instituted in appreciation of Ekwueme’s contribution towards the growth of education in the country. Ekwueme founded the institution before it was taken over by the Federal government.
Onu, who said that the lecture and award ceremony coincide with Ekwueme’s birthday, explained that Prof Nwabueze would deliver the lecture titled, “The legacies of Dr. Alex Ekwueme to governance, political and social development in Nigeria ”.
According to him, His Royal Majesty, Dr. Edmund Dakoru, Mingi X11 and Amanyanabo of Nembe Kingdom will be the chairman.
He said: “Even before Ekwueme set up this Polytechnic, Oko people were enjoying his scholarship. In governance, he had made a lot of sacrifices to ensure peaceful coexistence of Nigerians. So we thought it wise to immortalize him through this annual lecture.”
