WARRI—FOR some time now, the chairman of Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr. Henry Sakpra and the traditional ruler of Udu Kingdom, Ovie of Udu kingdom, HRM, Owhoru I, have been at daggers-drawn, and not even the intervention of the state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, who invited the feuding parties to a meeting, has resolved matters.
The latest is that the Udu Traditional Committee, UTC, had threatened to curse the chairman, who is gunning for the Udu seat in the Delta State House of Assembly in 2011.
There is a general belief that because traditional rulers are representatives of the ancestors over their subjects, placing a curse on a son, who is a council chairman and running for a political office, signifies a lot of danger for the person in question.
In a letter, entitled, “Dr. Henry Sakpra wants to dance naked in the market place”, signed by the secretary of UTC, Chief T. K. Dugbo, they accused Sakpra of disparaging the traditional stool with his unfounded allegation, “which to all intents and purposes are meant to bring the throne to disrepute and public odium”.
The council said, “Perhaps, Dr. Sakpra is pretending not to know the caliber of personalities painstakingly selected to be members of the UTC.”
They are people who cannot and can never make such criminal demands form a council chairman because they are men and woman of honour whose duty is to see to the developmental progress in all the nooks and crannies of the kingdom”.
“Consequently, the Udu Traditional Committee hereby calls on Sakpra to retract the statement within seven days from the date of this publication and tender unreserved apology to the Ovie and the Udu Traditional Committee or else, he should be ready to faced both traditional and legal consequences”, it stated.
The UTC maintained that their warning to Sakpra to terminate his House of Assembly ambition was still in force and that he should stop spending money belonging to the people on bill board and campaigns said the only option open to him was to render account to the people or face the EFCC.
As at the time of writing this report, yesterday, Sakpra is not known to have apologized to the royal father and Udu people are currently divided between some persons who still loyal to the chairman, who controls political power at the moment, and the traditional rulers, who have positioned themselves as the mouthpiece of the people with their demand for account of stewardship.
