Ekpoma—Three policemen and a vulcaniser were killed, yesterday, when armed robbers stormed the Ekpoma branch of a first generation bank in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The vulcaniser, said to be having a meal in a restaurant on the Auchi-Benin highway, was hit by a stray bullet.
The robbers were said to have made away with undisclosed sum of money.
It was gathered that many of the bank’s employees and customers were also seriously injured in the operation, which lasted for about 30 minutes.
They were rushed to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.
The armed robbers, seven in number and heavily armed, came in a Toyota Sienna Bus and blocked all exit points leading into the bank, before embarking on the operation.
One of the private security agents attached to the bank, described his survival as an act of God.
He said, “none of the private security men was killed or injured, but three policemen were killed, and another was injured.”
The Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Mr Joseph Akpoloa, told newsmen to come back later, when contacted, saying, “I have just lost three of my men, who only this (yesterday) morning booked for arms”.
As a result of the development, all other banks in the area were forced to close and suspend operations for the day.
