The National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Oyo State says 20 manufacturers of fake drugs were arrested within the last 10 months.
Mr Benjamin Haruna, the Unit Head of the agency, who made the announcement in Ibadan on Wednesday, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that a woman was recently arrested for allegedly adulterating a registered product.
He said although the woman had registered the product with NAFDAC, she relocated to another area and engaged in the production of a similar brand which had inferior quality.
“She was doing a completely different thing from what we registered, and unfortunately the herbal mixture is meant for pregnant women. She was using very dirty water and all manner of substances were recovered from her,” he said.
Haruna said the agency would not compromise standard, and would ensure that manufacturers of fake drugs were arrested and prosecuted.
He warned consumers to be cautious about the products they consume, noting that some “unscrupulous people” were out marketing products that were not safe for consumption by the public.
“NAFDAC is on the alert; we are using every means to track them down and deal with them ruthlessly. Recently NAFDAC brought in equipment that can test a drug at the ports and all entry points to ensure that they are not adulterated,” he added. He also urged the state government to assist the agency in the provision of a ware house
