Lagos lawyer, Mr. Bamidele Aturu, yesterday, faulted plans by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to compile a new voters’ register, saying the law in place provides for an up-date of the register.
He added that a new voters’ register would amount to wasting resources that should have been invested in other sectors of the society.
Addressing newsmen in Lagos, Aturu said: “The only way to ensure we achieve credible elections come 2011 is to ensure that only people of a constituency vote in that place and that nobody votes twice and not by a new voters’ register.
“The N87 billion requested by INEC for voters’ registration should have been used for other sectors of the society that are in dire need of attention. We have roads and schools that should be attended to and as a matter of fact, doctors and university lecturers are on strike in many states.
“If we have another new INEC chair in future, does it mean we will spend more money if he insist he wants to review the voters register?”
