Nigeria Premier League chairman, Davison Owumi was yesterday arrested, but later released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, over an allegation that he corruptly enriched himself while serving as Chairman of Enugu Rangers.
Owumi was arrested in Abuja following a petition, written by former Enugu Rangers boss, Ray Nnaji. The NPL boss was in charge of Rangers as chief executive officer between 2002 and 2006.
He was succeeded by Ray Nnaji.Owumi’s brush with the anti_corruption agency is coming on the heels of a similar prosecution of four top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) led by former president, Sani Lulu.
Lulu, along with former vice_president Amanze Uchegbulam, ex_NFF chieftains Taiwo Ogunjobi and Bolaji Ojo_Oba, have since been arraigned before an Abuja court to answer charges of corruption and abuse of office while they were in charge at the Glass House.
According to EFCC spokesman, Femi Babafemi the case of the NFF quartet is still on going and would soon reach a logical conclusion.The new NPL season is expected to kick off on Saturday after several postponements.
