Edo PDP, group condemn violence at ACN registration centre

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—THE Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP,; Coalition of civil society and labour in Edo State, yesterday, condemned the bloody violence that  marred the on going registration of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, members in the state and called on the Edo State Police Commissioner and the Director of the State Security Services, SSS, in the state to fish out the perpetrators.

Over ten persons are said to be receiving treatment in different hospitals in the state as a result of machete cuts and gun shot injuries, while three persons including one Emmanuel Omoregbe, a father of four, were shot dead by political thugs.

It was learnt that some candidates hijacked the registration exercise to ensure that only their supporters registered as members of the party. This, it was gathered, was done to give them advantage in the forthcoming primaries of the party and give  a cabal in the party total control of the party machinery.

Reacting, however, yesterday, the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, in a statement  by its Director of Publicity, Okharedia Ihimekpen, recalled how in August 2010, a member of the party, Oghogho Omoregie, was murdered the same day he declared his interest to run for the House of Representatives seat for Uhunmwonde/Orhiomnwon Federal constituency.

“While we sympathized with the families of the victims of Ovia South West murder, we wish to reiterate that we are daily being vindicated that the ACN-led government neither believes in the rule of law nor democracy,” the party said.

While addressing newsmen, the civil society organizations in an address signed by Comrade Kaduna Eboigbe (Chairman NLC Edo State), Comrade Austin Osakue( President Civil Society Coalition, Rev David Ugolor (Executive Director ANEEJ) and others, the group urged the Governor to consier providing support for the family of the late Omoregbe as well as provide medical attention to persons who were sprayed with bullets by the thugs.

“ Police authorities should ensue that the three persons who were in the vehicle in which Emmanuel Omoregbe was killed being held in the police custody with bullet  wounds need good medical treatment as their status currently is in jeopardy, even as we recognize that they are principal witness of what happened” it stated.
