IBADAN—CHAIRMAN, Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission, ICPC, Justice Emmanuel Ayoola (rtd) has said the clamour for upward review of the allowances of National Assembly members is perceived as utmost insensitivity to the poor conditions of service of employees in the country.
According to the revered retired justice who was speaking at the inauguration of the Oyo State chapter of the National Anti-Corruption Volunteer Commission yesterday, said there are many pretenders and hypocrites who proclaim anti-corruption rhetoric from the roof-top but offer comfort and protection to the corrupt.
Among the hypocrites, he stated, “are millions of Nigerians who hate corruption only when it is practiced by their enemies but embrace it when they are benefited by it.”
The anti-corruption czar said corruption is found at all levels of society. He said, we find them both at the street level; we find them at the corridors of power in the executive; we find them in the judiciary; we find them in the legislature.”.
Justice Ayoola who was represented by Resident Consultant, Media and Events, Mr. Folu Olamiti many Nigerians, not only paid lip service to anti corruption crusade but also preoccupied themselves with weakening or destroying the campaign to reduce corruption in our land..
The immediate past National President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu(SAN) lent credence to the stance saying it was unthinkable that the legislators could be earning as much as that when the anti-corruption commission, police, judiciary and education sector were not well funded.
He lamented that corruption had worsened to the extent that some parents now buy the certificate of the National Youths Service Corps for their children when they did not serve the nation at all.
This, legacy, if left for children, would turn out to work against he society in future.
