ABUJA—African Union Commission, AUC, yesterday condemned the low attention and poor financial assistance the cultural sector in Africa had been receiving.
Director, Social Affairs Department of AUC, Dr. Olawale Maiyegun, who stated this at the opening session of the experts’ meeting of the 3rd session of the African Union Conference of ministers of culture in Abuja, said despite the huge potentials in culture, various government and stakeholders have not been putting enough effort on the development of the sector.
The theme of the 5-day event is: “Sustainable Financing of the Cultural Development Sector in Africa.”
According to him, “the implementation of programmes charter for African cultural renaissance campaign, its ratification and implementation will boost the value and preservation of our traditions and culture, as well as uplift our self-esteem as Africans, which in turn will contribute to our regional and continental integration and the much desired development of our continent”.
