Students disrupt inaguration of IBB campaign in Abeokuta

ABEOKUTA – HUNDRED of supporters of former President Ibrahim Babangida yesterday had a rough time in the hands of students who disrupted the commissioning of the IBB campaign organisation and also prevented them from embarking on a road show.

Many had to scale fences of buildings to escape while others took refuge in nearby buildings to avoid being manhandled by the enraged students.

Members of the IBB Presidential Campaign Organisation led by the coordinator, Chief Sunday Bello, at the 22, Oke-Ilewo road campaign office had gathered for the commissioning and inaugurating of members of the team before the students descended on them.

Trouble started for the IBB supporters as they were about rounding up for the commencement of the road show when the students in about six buses stormed the venue of the programme chanting anti- Babangida songs.

The students under the aegis of Ogun State Joint Campus Committee of the National Association of Nigerian Students led by Adeyemi Azeez, were on their way to their campus from a press conference they had earlier addressed before they saw the IBB supporters and decided to “pay them a courtesy call.”

On coming down from their buses, the students chased around the IBB supporters saying “no to IBB”, “IBB is a traitor”, “we don’t want IBB” destroyed the canopies outside the building and kicked away all the chairs.

Tee shirt wearing supporters had to remove them to prevent being attacked while some looked for vehicles to ferry them to safety while all entreaties to the angry students failed.

They refused to disperse until they were sure that the people could not go on with their programme.

Earlier before the disruption, Speakers including the Chairman of Conference of Political Parties, CNPP, in the State, Otunba Owolabi Odubudo, hailed IBB saying that he was the best thing to have ever happened to the country.
