(Enugu)—Traffic was yesterday briefly halted at Umumba on the busy Enugu-Onitsha expressway as robbers carried out an early morning raid on motorists.
The attack was carried out between 7. 50 a.m. and 8.10 a.m., when early morning travellers were on their way to various destinations.
Eye witnesses said that a five-man gang that was heavily armed attacked six vehicles, comprising four mini-commercial buses and two cars.
The attack struck fears into motorists, forcing those coming from Onitsha end to park their vehicles at nearby Orie Umumba Market after signals went out that hoodlums were on the prowl.
The development caused a lull in traffic flow on the road for over 10 minutes until the driver of a car driving past signalled to drivers and occupants of the parked vehicles that the route was free once more.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, who was later at the scene, reports that two vehicles, a Mercedes 230 with number plate BC760E NU and a Jetta car with number plate CM199ENU were victims of the attack.
The cars, which were abandoned at the scene, had their doors open and contents such as bags, documents and other personal effects of the owners strewn all over the place, while the occupants were nowhere to be found.
The buses also were parked on the spot near the water reservoir but their passengers were not in sight.
Eye witnesses said they fled into the bush for safety immediately the buses stopped.
When contacted on phone, Enugu Commissioner of Police, Mr Danazumi Doma, said he would immediately dispatch a mobile squad to the scene.
