The Lagos State government has set a limit of 20 storeys for buildings along some major roads in the new Ikeja Model City plan.

A statement by the state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Fransisco Bolaji Abosede, revealed that the roads are Ikorodu Road, Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja; Mobolaji Bank-Anthony Way, Ikeja; and Kodesoh as well as Oba Akran Roads in Ikeja, adding that the decision followed a recommendation contained in the Ikeja Model City Report.

Abosede further stated that buildings in Adekunle Fajuyi Way, Lateef Jakande Road, Opebi Link (Sheraton) Bye-pass, Acme Road and Wempco Road in Ogba must not exceed a maximum of 10 floors. He said the city plan project is to tackle the challenges of rapid urbanisation, as well as solve myriads of social malaise.

He said the Model City Plan, which is the second after that of Ikoyi-Victoria Island, was conceived to make the city liveable, harmonious and sustainable to meet the challenges of the mega city status.

The commissioner added that Ikeja had grown from a small settlement that it was many years ago to a sprawling city, which had attracted a large and varied number of people to work and reside within its borders.

“This influx has overstretched the urban infrastructure and amenities initially provided for a few number of people, as against the present growing population,” he said, adding that this has produced challenges such as flooding, security, traffic gridlock, shortage of water and electricity supply.

“The Ikeja Model City Plan will be a designation of ‘High Street Corridors’ which often are corridors of activity and centres of attraction in any community.

Areas designated as High Streets are: Joel Ogunnaike Street, Isaac John Street/Sobo Arobiodu Junction, Fakunle Fajuyi Way, Lateef Jakande Road, Allen Avenue/Opebi Street, Toyin Street, Olowu Street and Ogba-Isheri Road among others,” he said. (NAN)
