C’wealth Games: China, others reject Nigeria

By Fidelis Ebu

ABUJA — Countries are rejecting requests for Nigerian athletes to use their sports facilities to train ahead of the Commonwealth Games for fear that some could

Sports minister and Chairman, National Sports Commission, Ibrahim Isah Bio said this when he visited the athletes in camp for the games beginning in India, October

Bio stated that Cuba , China and Bulgaria among others were the countries approached for the training tour to prepare the athletes.

Though the minister is still holding talks with Korean authorities to bail out the country on the proposed training tour for the games, Bio said most of the countries hitherto approached expressed fears that the athletes could defect.

“We had earlier sealed an agreement with the Chinese authorities, and the athletes were supposed to have left since the 10th of this month, but they later changed and introduced a very stringent measure that we should get a sponsor or corporate organisation in China inviting our athletes. And this sponsor would sign an undertaking should any of the athletes defect.

“The issue of athletes and even some accompanying officials defecting has been a very big snag in our quest to give these athletes the desired exposure. Exposure is indeed a real education which these athletes need to excel in their callings.“It is unfortunate these innocent athletes are paying for the sins allegedly committed in the past,” Bio said.
