Abia Police detain 4 officers for divulging information

Umuahia—ABIA State Police Command, yesterday said it is currently detaining four police officers for divulging information provided by the public to assist the command in crime fighting.

The command further said that it has a total of 386 suspected kidnappers and other criminals in its cells and expressed worry that witnesses and the victims were not coming forward to enable the command prosecute the suspects.

The state Commissioner for Police, Mr. Jonathan Johnson, who disclosed this, while speaking at a phone-in programme at the state radio, Broadcating Corporation of Abia State, BCA, lamented that the command was handicapped in terms of equipment.

Meanwhile, the command yesterday also displayed a slain robbery suspect, gunned down by its men along Umuahia-Aba Road while a gang of hoodlums were attacking travelers on the busy highway. According to Johnson, the officers were being detained and would decisively be dealt with after investigations, so as to give the public the confidence to always provide useful information to the police.

He, however, noted with regret the lukewarm attitude of victims and witnesses, who are not cooperating with the police to prosecute the suspects.
