Five National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in Omuma Council Area of Rivers have been kidnapped by unidentified gunmen, the police have said.
A spokesperson for the Police Command in Rivers, Mrs Rita Abbey, confirmed the abduction in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt.
She said that the corps members were abducted at their lodge in Umuogba Community Secondary School, Omuma Local Government Area.
The victims are Monsurat Odemosu, Barbara Obioha, Chinwendu, Obianuju and Hussani Ali, all females.
Abbey further said that the bandits, who struck at the lodge at about 11.30 a.m. on Thursday, equally stole the generator set belonging to the corps members.
Other items carted away by the hoodlums included television set, a DVD player, mobile phones and undisclosed amount of money, she said.
Abbey said that the Joint Task Force (JTF) responded, but the hoodlums escaped into neighbouring Abia State, shooting sporadically.
According to police image maker, at about 8 a.m. on Friday, the kidnapers called and directed one of the victims to speak.
Abbey further said that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Special Armed Robbery Squad (SARS), Anti Kidnapping detectives and patrols had being deployed for search and rescue operation.
A source at the NYSC secretariat, Port Harcourt, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident, saying that reports reaching the secretariat showed that the victims were in good condition.
The source said that the kidnapers had not made any demand and that they were hopeful that the corps members would soon be released by their abductors.
