University of Benin (Uniben) has been described as an institution that have produced sound graduates that are making waves all over the world in diverse areas of specialisation.

Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Osayuki Godwin Oshodin stated this at the 64th Council Meeting/Awards and Dinner Party organised by the University Alumni Association recently in Lagos.

Prof. Oshodin stressed that the best Dentist in North Carolina, USA, is a product of the University; the medical inventor, Brig. Gen. Ovadje is also an alumnus of the institution.

He stated further that the likes of Governors Fashola and Uduaghan of Lagos and Delta states respectively; Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Minister of State for Works; as well as notable professors, politicians and captains of industries, legal luminaries are notable products of the University.

His words: “We are encouraging research activities and capacity building, and through the intervention of the Education Trust Fund (ETF), we are providing sponsorship for staff training and many more.

“The university, in line with the rapid changes in the world, is set to introduce new academic programmes into its curricula in a bid to reposition it for academic excellence and human capacity building,” Prof. Oshodin stated.

The Vice Chancellor enjoined the alumni family to place more emphasis on making their children and wards to study hard and get admitted into the university on merit rather than giving these children the impression that as an alumnus, you can always secure admission for them even when they fail to make the cut off marks in their chosen discipline.

Represented by Prof. John Okhuoya, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Osayuki reiterated his belief in Post-University Matriculation Examination, PUME, as a quality control process which has helped to reduce significantly the problems cultism, laziness and unrest in the University.

Prof. Oshodin also hinted on the University Management’s delight at the planned upgrade of the Exams and Records Division of the University by North America Branch of the Association. The intervention, according to the Vice-Chancellor would help to solve the problem of transcripts in the university, adding that “the university has located a site for the installation of the equipments whenever they arrive.

However, awardees present are: Oyekan Habideen Akanbi, Dr. Joe Owie, Dr. Eniola Ajayi, Dr. (Mrs) Maureen Igwe, Otaru Roland Itoyah, Coker John Oluseyi, Oshevire Paul Adarighofua, Brig. Gen (Dr) A.V. Okpobrisi while the likes of Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu; Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN); and Opeyemi Bamidele Michael, Commissioner for Information were represented.

In his contribution, Chief Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, President Worldwide of the Association stressed that Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, the Lagos State Governor,  who is an alumnus of the university  has become a toast worldwide with the miraculous transformation of the state, adding “none would have imagined the dynamism and strength of character that he was to bring to bear on governance in the state.

He went on: “He is a true epitome of the Uniben spirit. Almost every one that has enjoyed the rear privilege of studying at Uniben never comes out the same, he or she is remodeled, refined and thoroughly primed for success.”
