Oyo: ACN accuses Akala of fuelling NURTW crisis

By Ola Ajayi
Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in Oyo State, has accused Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, of fanning embers of discord between two factions of the state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, for alleged selfish political ambition.

This came as the party raised alarm over an alleged moves by the PDP to buy over the INEC’s electoral officers in the 33 local governments over the fresh voters’ register being planned by the commission in preparation for the next year’s general election.

It said, “our party raised the alarm recently that the PDP in Oyo State had infiltrated the INEC such that it had been allowed to compile and submit a list of its members to be considered for employment by the commission. While the public awaits a reversal on this, the same PDP has now perfected a plan to obtain the commitment of electoral officers in Local Governments to enable it doctor the voters’ register in its favour and use it to perpetrate electoral fraud in the 2011 elections.

The party through its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Mr. Wasiu Olatubosun, alleged that the inglorious roles being played by the governor in the NURTW crisis could set the state on fire.

According to him, the favouritsm of the governor was evident in his continued support for Salako and order given by him that his(Salako’s) supporters should man

all motor parks and popular bus stops in the state despite the nullification of chairmanship by the National Industrial Court.

Consequent upon the alleged partisanship of the governor, who is sympathetic to the dismissed chairman of the union, Alhaji Lateef Salako, the ACN has called on President Goodluck Jonathan and the Inspector General of Police to ensure full implementation of court order and keep eagle eye on the activities of the union to avert looming bloodshed.

ACN said, “As much as it condemns recent violent activities of the NURTW in the state as it concerned political thuggery and harassment of members of the public, we are disturbed by the inglorious roles of the Akala-led PDP government which sponsors the protracted leadership crisis in the union”.

“The public is worried by the meddlesomeness of the governor who apparently takes side and sponsors a faction in the crisis with all state machinery and thereby victimizes the other. This is evident in the implementation of the proscription order of the governor and subsequent placement of motor parks administration on local government authorities”.
