Medical director raises panel of inquiry over death of mother of triplets

By Gabriel Enogholase
BENIN – A panel of in-quiry has been set up by the Medical Director of Edo State-owned Specialist Hospital, Benin, Dr. Matthew Oriakhi, to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of a mother of triplets, Mrs. Olufumilayo Egharevba, in the hospital after a successful caesarian operation.

Vanguard gathered that the setting up of the inquiry by the hospital management was sequel to an alleged unprofessional conduct and act of negligence on the part of the medical personnel that attended to the woman on that fateful day.

It was gathered that following the death of the woman, her husband, Mr. Henry Egharevba, was planning a legal action against the management of the hospital.

Although it was further learnt that the triplets, who are with their foster parent, were in a stable condition, Mr. Egharevba who is based in Italy, has expressed dismay that the triplets who were supposed to be kept in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, were discharged to their foster parent about five hours after the operation.

Late Mrs. Egharevba, it was gathered, was placed on bed rest in the hospital about two days to her expected date of delivery, but her travails started on the D-day when she went into labour which resulted in her being operated upon on May 12.

Vanguard gathered that while the mother of the deceased had rushed the triplets to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, as allegedly recommended by physicians in the Specialist Hospital, Mrs. Egharevba was said to have given up the ghost same day.

However, in a telephone interview with journalists in Benin, Mr. Egharebva expressed disappointment over the questionable manner his wife died in the hospital, just as he questioned why the management of the hospital took the death of his wife as normal.

He also lamented that since the tragic incident occurred, neither the hospital management, the Hospital Management Board nor the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development as well as the Ministry of Heath, had called to express their concerns to the family over the tragic incident.

He appealed to the relevant authorities, including the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to ensure that justice was done and see to the welfare of the triplets to give the sad incident a human face.

When contacted by Vanguard in a telephone call, the Medical Director of the Specialist Hospital, Dr. Matthew Oriakhi, confirmed setting up the panel of inquiry on the incident but declined further comments on the issue.
