*Over control of motor parks

By Ola Ajayi

IBADAN—ATTEMPTS by some members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, believed to be loyal to the Oyo State Governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala to take over motor parks yesterday in Ibadan were violently resisted by the other faction claiming to be the legalized side.

Though, no casualty was recorded at the time of filing this report, Vanguard gathered that dangerous weapons were freely used by members of the union.

It was gathered that the resistance forced some traders at the Challenge area of the city to abandon their wares as they fled for dear lives.

Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala had earlier proscribed the union after the former Chairman, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola who was sent packing in controversial circumstances was declared the authentic chairman by the National Industrial Court, Abuja.

The governor also asked the chairman of each park to take over the activities of the union. As a result of the judgment of the NIC, loyalists of the reinstated chairman assumed they were to man the parks.

But, on getting to the parks yesterday, they reportedly met the supporters of the dismissed Chairman, Alhaji Lateef Salako acting as chairmen of the parks.

This resulted in confrontation where some of them were said to be injured, though the figure was not known.

After the mayhem in some other parks in the metropolis, some members of the union were seen brandishing cutlasses in about five vehicles.

Their presence caused stampede at the ever crowded Mokola as some commuters waiting to board buses ran for safety.
