Management of Pro- One Division side, OUK have decided to revert to its old name of Abia Warriors FC of Umuahia, under which it entered the Nigeria league scene with a bang years back.
A highly placed source in Umuahia said the decision to return to the club’s original name may have been hinged on the need to re-invigorate the team for next season, with all efforts geared to having it fight off all draw backs responsible for the team’s inability to gain promotion to the elite Premier league these past seasons.
“Entire management, coaching crew and players would like to use the opportunity to thank Governor T.A. Orji the wonderful support and attention accorded the team during this out-gone season, just as we also wish him well as he consolidates government’s programmes and policies to transform Abia State. Abia Warriors FC is an integral part of this vision†the source said.
It will be recalled that Abia Warriors hit the league scene about 2003, then privately managed before the state government took over control of its affairs which brought about the change of name to OUK. It however was unable to produce the form and strategy to move up to the Premier division due largely to instability of top management over time.
