LAGOS— THE Igba of Warri, Chief Rita Lori-Ogbebor, has called on South East traditional rulers to assist the Federal Government in the fight against kidnapping in the region, saying the rising spate of kidnapping in the geo-political zone was an indication of leadership failure.
She also condemned alleged involvement of some traditional rulers in kidnapping, describing it as a stain on the traditional institution.
Lori-Ogbebor, who disclosed this in a chat with Vanguard, called on the federal government to aggressively address the issue of youth unemployment, which some have linked to be among the prime causes of the crime.
According to her, “it is unfortunate that kidnapping has got to the stage of kidnapping journalists. Journalists are the eyes of the public, and that is how it is anywhere in the world. It is sad that it happened to them. But I am challenging the traditional rulers to get involved in the fight against this crime.
“As leaders, they know their domain more than any person, they cannot claim ignorance of the happenings in their kingdom. So, they should consider the interest of Nigeria and help to end this crime.
I believe that their input can make a lot of difference, because they understand their subjects very well. Like myself, who is a high Chief in Itsekiri land, I know my people very well and I know how to make them listen to the voice of wisdom any time the need arises.
