*And no ransom had been demanded

PORT HARCOURT — Gunmen yesterday abducted a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Rivers State, High Chief Sam Ezebalike and his wife, Sera in Ahoada East local government area.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Dr Rita Inoma Abbey, who confirmed the development to the Vanguard, said the kidnappers set a Nissan Station Wagon they came in on fire before disappearing with the hostages in a speed boat through Oshi Oppudo waterside in Ahoada East.

Community sources said the kidnappers were seven in number. And they cornered the vehicle the PDP chieftain was reportedly driving in with his wife.

Before fleeing with the hostages, the kidnappers allegedly shot indiscriminately to scare off community youths and passers-by.

The incident came barely two days after some foreign seafarers were taken hostage off the coast of Bonny in the state and were later released after a day in the custody of the kidnappers.
The recent case of abduction has again heightened fears in the state on the fate of the amnesty for ex-militants in the region.

Meanwhile, at press time, no group had claimed responsibility for the abduction.
