CD urges FG to revoke federal roads’ contracts in Anambra

Onitsha—Campaign for Democracy ,CD, has urged the Federal Government to revoke the contract of Onitsha-Awka and Onitsha-Ihiala road projects being executed by Consolidated Construction Company, CCC.

The appeal was made in a statement issued by Anambra chapter of the group in Onitsha yesterday.

It was jointly signed by the State Chairman and the Campaign and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Uzor Uzor and ThankGod Ifediba, respectively.

The statement said in December 2002, a contract amounting to N24.5 billion was awarded to CCC, a company with headquarters in Greece, to construct Onitsha-Uli road, while Julius Berger Construction was awarded the second phase of the contract from Amoka to Owerri.

“However, the contract was reviewed upward to the tune of over N50 billion around 2008 when it was shared between the two companies.

“Due to CCC’s lack of enough equipment and proper planning, it had not reached 60 per cent of the project since eight years after the contract was awarded.

“There had been enormous loss of lives. The road had recorded not less than eight fatal accidents with over 108 Nigerians losing their lives from 2002 to date,’’ the statement said.
