As Delta Police nab 48 kidnappers

MEN of the Delta State Police Command have arrested 48 suspected kidnappers in the state, just as one of the gangs demanded N30,000 as ransom to secure the release of an abducted woman.

State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Yakubu Alkali, while briefing newsmen in Asaba yesterday said a total of 22 cases of
were reported between January to June this year while 48 suspects were arrested within the same period.

One striking case of kidnapping which elicited laughter during the briefing was the kidnapping of a woman an Onicha-Ugbo.

According to the CP, “on the 14th of July this year at 1500 hours, one Malechi Odozi, female of Onicha-Ugbo was kidnapped by unknown persons on a motorcycle to Idumuje -Uno.

“The kidnappers demanded a ransom of N30,000. However, through information from well-meaning public spirited individuals one of the suspects (names withheld) aged 19 years of Idumuje-Uno was arrested and the kidnapped woman rescued unhurt.”

On the female Divisional Police Officer, DPO, recently killed in Asaba, the police boss said it was a clear case of assassination, pointing out that although no arrest has been made so far, “but we have very useful information we are working on.”

The female DPO, Mercy Dagogo James, a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP,  was killed  in Asaba recently  by unknown gunmen  at about 8 p.m.  by the Ogbeogonogo market.
